Where is the best place to stay over Thanksgiving

by Bill Schlegel

I am thinking of doing a family get together over the Thanksgiving Holiday. I would like an ocean front home rental that has a wood burning fireplace, elevator for elderly parents and beach that you can run on during the day. I have two older sons and it would be nice to be located near some good quality restaurants and or pubs. I will need about 4-5 bedrooms.

I have never been to the Outer Banks before but was told its great over Thanksgiving. I currently live in Richmond and Greenvile south Carolina not sure where I will be traveling from. I understand hateras is very good but have no experience and would appreciate your recommendation.

Best Regards,

Many Choices

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your question. First of all, the two most perfect places would be my houses, but that is because I am biased. And since they are booked, now for the unbiased answer.

Thanksgiving and the Christmas - New Years holiday weeks are quite different from the summer. It is not nearly as crowded and the pace is more in keeping with the time of year.

Let's take your request one by one. First, as far as ocean front and wanting an elevator and wood burning stove, the only thing that may be difficult is the wood buring stove. Many houses have fireplaces, but they are the propane variety. This is more of a clean up and safety issue than anything else. As far as ocean front and elevator, you can get that sort of house at most any town on the Outer Banks. Some of the most amazing houses are in Pine Island, Duck Landing (I am biased on Duck Landing since I own a house on the street) and Four Seasons. These are all in Duck or Corolla and will complete your checklist.

As far as beaches you can run on, again, given the time of year, most any beach will suit this purpose. I do like the beaches of Hatteras Island, because of how wide they are. Also, there are four wheel drive sections where you can claim your own beach. But again, we are talking about Thanksgiving, so you will not have people claiming sections of the beach like in the summer.

The thing that might distinguish is the fact that you want quality restaurants and night life for your sons. From my own personal experience, with older children, that points you towards Nags Head and north. Hatteras has great restaurants and pubs, but not in the abundance that you will find them in Corolla, Duck, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head.

Ok, so now I have pointed you to every section of the Outer Banks. If I were going to try to do all of this, I would likely lean towards Pine Island or Duck, with a short drive to the restaurants and pubs.

Now, there is no doubt everyone who reads this will have their own opinion, so I invite you to chime in.

Again, being biased, if you want help finding a house, you can contact Sun Realty (www.sunrealtync.com) for all of OBX or Outer Beaches (www.outerbeaches.com) for Hatteras Island. They are who my houses are with.

Kind regards,
