The reason for why the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is so famous is for several reasons. First, it is the tallest lighthouse in North America. It was built to overlook one of the most dangerous areas for sailing along the North America coast, labeled the Graveyard of the Atlantic. The original lighthouse, built in 1803, was later torn down and replaced in 1870 because it did not do the job. The new lighthouse projected 191 feet into the ocean.
The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse gathered more fame in 1999 when it was moved from its original location, due to severe erosion, to where it stands today. If ever in Buxton, make sure you take a trip up to the top of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. It is one heck of a work out, but the views from the top are spectacular.
