When did the beach road north of Duck become open to the general public?

by Darren Lawrence
(Delaware, OH)

When I lived on the OBX back in '83-84 I seem to remember there being a gate and guard on Duck road and it being a private community. Also,if I remember correctly, you had to get permission from the park service to go north to Corova because of the wild horses. Does any of this ring a bell to anybody?

You have a good memory

Welcome back, Darren.

You are correct. There was a gate on the road north of Duck until the state took over the care of the road. This was all changed in 1984. I actually wrote about it on the page about Corolla.

With that road being opened, that led to the boom in building in the Corolla area and the eventual relocation of the Corolla wild horses further north.

Kind regards,

Dan
