Stumped
by: Dan

To my readers:

I have sat on this for quite awhile trying to get an answer on what these stome markers could be and what the "MV" (motor vehicles???) could mean. I have not been able to find an answer anywhere and I even tried contacting the NCDOT, bit have not heard anything back.

If anyone can help Brian (and me at this point) solve this mystery, I should would appreciate it.

Kind regards,
Dan Spaventa

So, I recieved a picture of the markers in the original question. Any idea what they are and what the MV stands for? They are all over Dare County according to Brian.

MV = "Main Valve"
by: Dan

The folks at NCDOT responded to the question:

I apologize for the delay in answering your question. This was originally sent to my supervisor and he is out of the country with the National Guard.

"MV" stands for "main valve." They are typically used to mark valves for the county water system.

If you have any more questions let me know. Thanks.

can we remove them?
by: Anonymous

I have a pair of these in my yard. I understand their importance when they were building our community. Mine was the last home built in it, and I have a pair of these in my front yard and they are an eye sore. Since I own the land is it okay for me to remove these markers?

It does mean either Main Valve or Master Valve. Big question is, can they be removed? Wife was backing out and some how almost tore end off of her minivan. Can I remove it is my ?.

MV posts

NO, You cannot remove them as they mark valves for utilities, and are needed for future work/repairs on the systems.

Also, you do not own the land where the utilities are run thru, the term is "right of way" and the owner of the utility has been granted full rights to access at any time.

A call to the 811 system will give locations to the utility's if you need to dig or build nearby.
