Ridiculous. We got out just before Hurricane Bill and couldn't believe how many places were out of business in Hatteras and the surrounding areas or that there was even a beach driving issue. Your always going to have a few idiots that go over the roped off areas but perhaps if the beach patrols were doing a better job it would certainly discourage beach and wild life vandals. There's a webcam on the top of HI lighthouse- focus on the looters license plates and leave the beaches and the rest of the drivers who obey the rules alone. Half the fun of going all the way down there is to drive out to the point. Beside all the black tipped sharks in the water, I saw quite a few helicopters making passes- certainly they would notice someone on the closed off sections. Close the beaches to driving and folks might as well find someplace else to vacation and take the money to Myrtle or Hilton Head. In Cancun, they have volunteer nesting babysitters and adoption people to watch for the looters- maybe the Audubon members in HI should do the same--of course, they would have to drive on the beach to reach the nests!
