Should I take a roadtrip to the Outer Banks?

by Tammy
(Parksburg, PA)

I would love to take a road trip to the Outer Banks. Do you have any suggestions on how long we should spend there? Where to stay? Where to eat? What are some great things to see? What can you tell me about the lighthouses and other points of interest?

I think you will want a week minimum to fully enjoy the Outer Banks. (And if you can make it two weeks that would be infinitely better.) To get you started on things to do, read through the sightseeing page to get some ideas. It will also give you information on each of the lighthouses. Currituck and Cape Hatteras are the two lighthouses you can climb to the top of to get some spectacular views.

As far as where to stay, what are your interests? If you like shopping, nightlife, and so forth, than the northern end of the island (Nags Head and north) is where you want to stay. If you are more into privacy and water sports (surfing, wind surfing, etc.), you will want to stay on Hatteras Island. Again, check out this link about the towns on the Outer Banks to decide which fits what you are seeking. We have a house in Duck (in the northern end) and Salvo (in the southern end), so we are a bit partial to those two towns.

As for where to eat, check out these reviews of restaurants on the Outer Banks. There is a good mix between restaurants on the northern versus southern end and types of restaurants, so you should find something that will match what you are looking for.
