Otter Watching

by David
(Rochester, NY)

I'd like to see some river otters on my visit in a couple of weeks. I saw one at Pea Island once. Any other sites where I'd be "assured" to see some?

Only one "assured" place" ...
by: Dan

Hi David,

Sorry for the delay in getting this posted. The only "assured" place is the NC Aquarium (just kidding), but I know you meant in the wild.

Pea Island is a good place, as well as Oregon Inlet. In addition, they have been spotted in Pamlico Sound along Hatteras Island and Ocracoke. People have told me that the Village of Hatteras is a good spot to find them.

This may seem like a strange idea, but you may want to check in at the local bait shop wherever you are staying, because they will likely be able to give you more up to date information, rather than just general area information.

Good luck! I hope you find them and would love to see a picture.

Kind regards,

Dan

Otter siting
by: Anonymous

I've seen two otters swimming together in a small canal that connects to pamlico sound. The canal is right behind a house I'm renting for the week in frisco. It was around dusk when I spotted them. Wish I would've had my phone to snap a pix. Very cool.

Cool sighting! Wish I was going to be in OBX this year.

here's a spot
by: Dan from Baltimore

I was just kayaking last week on the OBX and the best put-in location in the Pea Island refuge area is currently closed, and is being used as a staging area for a bridge construction crew. So instead I put in at the Salvo Day Use area, just outside of town on the sound, in late afternoon. Paddled south and explored some tidal creeks and marsh inlets, and saw an otter swimming. Waited quietly and it came up onto the bank. So I'd suggest this as a decent location.

Otters in KDH
by: Ellen

I saw a pair of otters yesterday morning around 7 am - 8-16-17 swimming around a dock in the Kill Devil Hills sound. Just two little heads bobbing in the water. They seemed to be interacting, then they popped up on a closeby dock and played.
