Ocean side of Pea Island Cape Hatteras National Seashore

by Tim
(Charlotte, NC)

A few miles south of the Oregon Inlet, at a small lot, I climbed the dunes to find a knee-deep clear backwater with sand like velvet. Another 50 yards of sand to the waves. Wide. Open. Clean. August 2009. My goal for 2010 was to get an umbrella and beach chair and spend as much time at this spot as possible.

Only two weeks ago today, after heavy rain the lot was flooded so that only large pickups could park there. So I found another spot within a few miles and spent several hours there.

What makes the Outer Banks special
by: Tim

The simple fact of getting away from it all doubly well,

thanks to the water of the sound,

and the sound of the water.

Geographically gracing the state
with more than a familiar outline,

a phenomenal setting,
a beautiful rising,

an expanse
worth the expense.
