Kilmarlic Golf Club:
The Newest Outer Banks Golf Course

The Kilmarlic Golf Club is located in Powells Point, just four miles north on Route 158 past the Wright Memorial Bridge. It is one of the six championship Outer Banks golf courses. Its theme, "Play the Legend", seems strange for such a young course, but it is tied to a story of a ship that sailed from Kilmarnock, Scotland that ran aground in the 1700s full of casks of whiskey. The locals who salvaged the cargo celebrated their good fortune by naming the area Kilmarlic. The course lives up to its tag line. It has a four star rating from Golf Digest. The Washington Golf Monthly has said that every hole could be a signature hole. It is a Scottish style links course, and was chosen to host the North Carolina Open in both 2004 and again in 2009.

This 6,412 yard Par 72 course opened in 2002 and was designed by Tom Steele. Tom Steele’s creative design, sitting on 605 acres of sprawling wetlands and maritime forest will challenge every level of golfer, as you wind your way through the natural beauty of North Carolina exemplified by canopies of giant oak, pine and dogwood. The fairways are Bermuda grass, and the greens are A-1 and A-4 bentgrass. Bryan Sullivan is the director of golf, and Mike Slaughter is the head superintendent.

There are four sets of tees (see chart below for yardage) as follows:

  • Championship - Black

  • Middle - Gold

  • Senior - White

  • Ladies - Red

Green fees, including carts, generally run about $55 during January and February to about $115 during the summer months. The fees do vary by month, so check with the club for actual rates. In addition, the club does have separate rates for twilight, 9-hole, and a Preferred Guest Pass. The Kilmarlic Golf Club and the Seascape Golf Links in Kitty Hawk have arranged for a two day pass between the two courses. The course is open year round. The club does have a warm up area available. Tee Times can be made anytime but it is recommended that they be reserved in advance.
