Kill Devil Hills:
A Place the Locals Call Home.

I asked a friend of mine, Brenda Horne, to write about her home town of Kill Devil Hills. Brenda, who is the office manager in the Duck Sun Realty office, did me one better. She invited her entire staff to tell you about what they affectionately refer to as KDH.

Kill Devil Hills is a modern community steeped in history. It is the Outer Banks’ oldest township, established in 1953. As the largest municipality in Dare County, it is home to a year round population of almost 7,000.

THe Wright Brothers Monument in Kill Devil Hills Atop the highest dune in the center of town is the Wright Brothers National Memorial Dedicated to that historic flight on December 17, 1903, the monument was constructed in the 30’s and can been seen for miles. Special hearty grass was planted to keep the dune from continually shifting.

Kill Devil Hills, being the largest town on the Outer Banks, houses many locals. Across the street from the monument is the First Flight school complex housing elementary, middle and high schools, where many Outer Banks natives attend. And in between all that, you can catch an Outer Banks Daredevils baseball game!

It offers recreation and estuarine access’ with roller hockey, fitness trails, children’s play areas, restrooms and parking. Enjoy a round of putt-putt at the Lost Treasure Golf with a miniature train. With an old miners box cart train to get you to the first tee, it’s fun, fun, fun for all ages!

All of the beach accesses are public and the majority of them have parking available. Some even offer deck and gazebo space, as well as the occasional bath house, a perfect way to enjoy the beautiful ocean view.

If you're looking to shop, Kill Devil Hills has a variety of unique shops and boutiques. Pick up candles at Karen’s Country Candles or grab some saltwater taffy from Forbes Candy and Gift Shop. Buy souvenirs for your family friends at home from Parrot Bay Trading Company, Rainbow Harvest, Sunsations or Tickled Pink. Why not grab a book from North Carolina Books Inc. to take sunbathing? From specialty books to antique books and everything in between, come have a look!

Another beautiful sound sunset in the Outer Banks

Let's not forget the bait and tackle shops for the fisherman in the group. Check out T I's Bait and Tackle or Outer Banks Sportsman for your fishing supplies. Avalon Pier is a great place to cast your line out, complete with an arcade, refreshments and restrooms.

The restaurants endeavor to feed every appetite. Enjoy fine dining at the Brewing Station or the relaxed atmosphere of Awful Arthurs. Go oriental at Fuji’s or get funky at Goombays. Grab a cup of coffee from Front Porch Café or grab a unique beer from Chip’s Wine and Beer. Not in the mood for a crowd? Nothing beats our locally caught seafood. Steam up a bucket of fresh crabs or oysters from Billy’s Seafood. Whatever you’re in the mood for, Kill Devil Hills has it all.

KDH is the place to go for nightlife. Enjoy dinner and a show at the Comedy Club of the Outer Banks. Watch a movie at the local theater. Sip on a Bahama Mama while listening to the local bands playing at Port O’ Call or The Pit.

Do you just need a place to relax? Kill Devil Hills has many OBX vacation rentals and hotels to suit any budget. Whether you are planning a family re-union, a romantic getaway, or a fun-filled family vacation, it has what you need. Join us in KDH today!
