Duck Woods Country Club:
Where Precision is Mandatory

The Duck Woods Country Club is located in Southern Shores, although its official address is Kitty Hawk. The course was part of the original design vision of Frank Stick who designed and built Southern Shores through his Kitty Hawk Land Company. The Kitty Hawk Land Company donated the 250 acres in 1964, and with the help of an FHA loan and the requirement to have 300 rural members, building commence in 1967. The club severed ties with the FHA in 1986 and in 1988 became the Duck Woods Country Club. The semi-private Outer Banks golf course does permit some public golfing, but limits it to a certain percentage of income to preserve its favorable tax status.

This 6,589 yard Par 72 course opened in 1968 and was designed by Ellis Maples. Ellis Maples designed a course that demands accuracy and precision as fourteen holes border water. The hardest hole may be the par 4 440 yard sixteenth hole because of the impact of the Outer Banks wind. The fairways are Bermuda grass and the greens are bent grass. Patrick O’Keefe is the general manager, and David Donovan is the head golf professional.

There are three sets of tees (see chart below for yardage) as follows:

• Championship

• Middle

• Forward

Like all Outer Banks golf courses, proper golf attire is required at all times. No cut off jeans, swimsuits or tank tops are permitted. Shirts with collars are mandatory. Blue jeans and denim are not permitted. Soft spikes only are permitted. Non-members have access to the practice facilities, both the driving range and putting greens, on day of play only.
